The Connection Between Self-Care and Weight Loss

Often, those on their weight loss and wellness journey find themselves derailed when unrealistic, irrational and often damaging thoughts lead to disappointment and, ultimately, abandoning goals. This is where self-care plays an important role.

At Vital Body, our Ideal Protein Certified Weight Loss Coaches truly care about our clients health and wellness. The learnings our coaches share go beyond the phases of the protocol. For example, in this blog post we want to discuss the importance and influence of self-care to weight loss.  

Your mindset, including how you think about your personal journey and yourself, is the foundation for developing healthy behaviors that become healthy habits in the long term. With that said, if your mindset is clouded by negative thoughts and ideas about yourself, shedding pounds will prove particularly difficult.

Often, those on their weight loss and wellness journey find themselves derailed when unrealistic, irrational and often damaging thoughts lead to disappointment and, ultimately, abandoning goals. This is where self-care plays an important role. 

It is especially important to foster and practice self-care when setbacks are experienced. Mistakes are bound to happen, and when they do, instead of listening to the voice in your head that’s tough and overly critical, it is important to treat yourself with kindness, to see yourself as someone who’s worth caring for rather than a person who’s deficient. 

Self-care helps ground you and fosters self-love and positivity, it strengthens your mindset and empowers you to reach your weight loss goals. In this way, self-care, defined as focusing on your personal needs and your mental (and physical) wellbeing, goes hand in hand with successfully losing weight and keeping it off.

Self-care looks different for everyone, it could mean getting at least 7 hours of sleep, prioritizing physical activity, practicing mindfulness, connecting with others, meditation, or even taking baths. 

To make the most out of your weight loss journey and to set yourself up for long-term success, ask yourself these questions: what do you do to care for yourself? What do you do to quiet negative thoughts, and build a positive relationship with yourself? What does self-care look like for you?
