Ideal Protein Phase 3: Keeping Your Weight Off for Life

What Ideal Protein Phase 3 really looks like: one-to-one coaching, your macro code, enjoying all foods, and finding your flow so the weight stays off.

You’ve done Phase 1. You’ve worked through Phase 2 and found your macro code. Now comes the part that matters most over the long term: living your life and keeping your results.

Phase 3 isn’t a finish line. It’s where everything you’ve learned becomes your own, through work, holidays, travel, stress, aging and all the ordinary ups and downs of real life.

What Phase 3 Looks Like at Vital Body

We work one to one with you in Phase 3. There’s no set timeline or one-size-fits-all program. Some people need a few months of support to feel confident on their own. Others need much longer, and that’s completely okay. Your coach adjusts to you.

Phase 3 is about:

  • Finding your flow. Day-to-day living, parties, events and dinners out, without needing a rule for every situation.
  • Enjoying all foods. Nothing is forbidden. You learn how different foods fit into your life and how they make you feel.
  • Using your macro code. The personal balance of protein, fat and carbohydrate you found in Phase 2 becomes your guide, not a strict set of numbers.
  • Testing and learning. You notice how your body responds to different foods, and what leaves you feeling good the next day.

What Phase 3 Coaching Looks Like

We meet weekly. At some point, most clients feel ready to meet every two weeks instead, and we move at your pace.

The conversation really varies depending on where you’re at. One week it might be about an upcoming trip or a family event. Another week it’s how a new food is sitting with you, a busy stretch at work, or simply how you’re feeling in your body. Your coach meets you where you are, so the support fits your real life.

Nourishment First

Phase 3 is a back-to-basics approach. Regular meals, enough protein, lots of vegetables, and good fats. It sounds simple, and it is. Nothing fancy, but it works, especially with a coach by your side. Good fats like olive oil, avocado, nuts and fish are part of feeling nourished and satisfied. If you grew up in the low-fat years, it can take a little time to trust that.

When you’re well nourished, it’s much easier to enjoy a treat without it turning into a struggle.

Movement and Muscle

Phase 1 was about gentle movement. Phase 3 is a great time to build on it. Many clients start adding strength training here, which helps protect muscle as we age and supports keeping your weight steady. Find movement you enjoy, and let it grow over time. You can read more in our article on exercise on Ideal Protein.

Know Your Why

People who keep their weight off over the long term usually have a reason that runs deeper than a number on the scale. Maybe it’s energy to keep up with your grandchildren, travel you’ve been looking forward to, or simply feeling good in your body. Come back to your why when life gets busy.

The Emotional Side

For many people, food has been a source of comfort for a long time. That doesn’t disappear when the weight comes off. Phase 3 is a good time to keep noticing what’s going on for you, with curiosity and kindness. Our article on emotional eating is a good place to start, and many clients find professional support helpful alongside their coaching.

It also helps to make peace with your body as it is now, and as it changes. We may not look like we did at 20, and allowing your body to age is an act of love.

Having a Plan

Life isn’t set up to make healthy eating easy, so it helps to have a few go-tos:

  • A fridge and pantry with easy options, like cut vegetables, hard-boiled eggs, olives or a can of tuna.
  • A few simple meals for busy days, tired days and “I don’t feel like cooking” days.
  • A plan for eating out and travel, and for the holidays.
  • A food journal you can come back to any time you want to check in with yourself.

Habits: A Bit of a Dance

Old habits creep back in. That’s just human nature, we all tend to take the path of least resistance. At the same time, new habits are forming. It’s a bit of a dance between the two, and that’s normal.

With time and support, something shifts. One day you notice that the new habit isn’t new anymore. It’s just what you do, and what you like to do.

Unlearning Old Patterns Takes Time

Patterns that took years to build don’t change overnight. Unlearning them is gradual, and it’s okay if it takes a while.

If you have a history of losing weight and gaining it back, again and again, Phase 3 is where it’s worth really investing. This is the phase that breaks the cycle, and having support while you do it makes all the difference. It’s one of the main reasons we work one to one with clients for as long as they need.

When Life Changes

Phase 3 carries you through real seasons of life, and some of them can shift things:

  • Menopause. What used to work may stop working, and your plan may need adjusting.
  • New medications. Some can affect appetite, weight or energy.
  • Stress and sleep. A hard stretch at work or a few bad nights can change your hunger and your choices.
  • Coming off a GLP-1. Having a coach and a plan in place makes that transition much smoother. You can read more in our GLP-1 article.

None of these mean you’ve done anything wrong. They’re just part of life, and they’re exactly when having support matters most. Our article on why you’re not losing weight goes deeper into some of these.

If the Scale Starts to Creep

It’s normal for weight to move a little. Check in with the scale regularly, in a rhythm that feels supportive, not stressful, and have a plan for what you’ll do if it starts to climb.

The scale is also just one measure. Your energy, how your clothes fit, how you sleep, and feeling at home in your body all tell you how you’re doing too.

Often a few days of journaling shows you what’s changed. Sometimes returning to Phase 2 for a while is all you need. It’s not a failure. It’s part of life, and your coach is there to help you adjust.

We also recommend an annual Ideal Protein tune-up, a few weeks back on Phase 1. Gaining 5 to 7 lbs over a year is very normal, and over a few years it can quietly add up. A yearly tune-up keeps that in check. If you’ve been away from coaching for a while, you can book a free Reconnect appointment with us.
