What Can I Eat on Ideal Protein Phase 1? Vegetables, Protein and Fruit

What goes on your plate on Ideal Protein Phase 1, what takes a short break, and why. A general guide from our certified coaches, with recipes.

One of the first questions people ask us is, “What will I actually eat?” It’s a fair question. From the outside, Phase 1 can look like a lot of rules. Once you’re in it, it becomes a simple rhythm: your Ideal Protein foods, plenty of vegetables, and one home-cooked dinner built around a whole protein.

Here’s a look at what goes on your plate, what takes a short break, and why.

A note before you start: Ideal Protein is a medical weight loss protocol. Your full Phase 1 food list, amounts and supplements come from your coach, and they’re set up for your body. Use this article as a general guide, and speak to your coach for guidance on what’s right for you.

What does a day on Phase 1 look like?

Phase 1 is built around three meals and one snack. Breakfast, lunch and your snack include an Ideal Protein food. Lunch and dinner include vegetables, and dinner is built around a whole protein you cook yourself, like salmon, chicken or a lean cut of beef.

That home-cooked dinner matters. It’s where you learn a way of cooking you’ll keep long after Phase 1.

Vegetables on Phase 1

Vegetables are the heart of Phase 1. They bring colour, crunch and volume, and they make your plate feel like a real meal. On Phase 1, vegetables fall into three groups:

  • Raw vegetables and lettuces. Salad greens and a few other raw vegetables you can enjoy as much as you like, at any meal.
  • Select vegetables. The lower-carb vegetables you’ll eat most often. They’re measured, and your coach will go over amounts with you. Many favourites are here, like broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, cabbage, asparagus, peppers, mushrooms, fennel and turnip.
  • Occasional vegetables. A handful are a little higher in carbs, so they’re kept to a smaller amount each week. Tomatoes, green beans, Brussels sprouts and eggplant are a few examples.

The starchy vegetables wait until you’ve reached your goal: potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, corn, peas and winter squash. They come back in Phase 2, when we bring foods back step by step.

Protein on Phase 1

Dinner is built around a whole protein, and there’s lots of choice:

  • Fish and seafood, like salmon, cod, halibut, shrimp and scallops
  • Skinless chicken and turkey
  • Lean cuts of beef, pork tenderloin and veal
  • Eggs
  • Plain tofu

Grill it, bake it, roast it or poach it. There’s no frying or breading on Phase 1. Your coach will help you with portions.

Why no fruit on Phase 1?

This is one of the questions we hear most, and it can feel strange at first. Fruit is good food. It’s just naturally higher in sugar, and Phase 1 is designed to keep carbs low while your body uses its own fat for energy. So fruit takes a short break.

It’s not gone for good. Fruit comes back in Phase 2, and it’s part of the nourishing, balanced way of eating we help you build for the long term.

Common questions about Phase 1 foods

Can I eat turnips on Phase 1?

Yes. Turnip is a select vegetable, and it’s a great stand-in for potatoes in mash, soups and oven fries. Try our Turnips in Mustard Sauce.

Can I have tomatoes on Phase 1?

Yes, as an occasional vegetable, so in smaller amounts through the week. Your coach will show you how they fit.

Can I have carrots on Phase 1?

Not on Phase 1. Carrots are naturally sweeter, so they wait until Phase 2.

Can I have onions?

Green onions, yes. Regular onion is raw only, like sliced into a salad. Cooked onion turns sweeter, so it waits.

Can I eat as many vegetables as I want?

Raw lettuces and a few raw vegetables, yes. The rest are measured. If you find yourself hungry most days, tell your coach, because your plan may need adjusting.

Do I measure vegetables raw or cooked?

Measure them before cooking. Cooked vegetables shrink, so measuring after means eating more than you planned.

Are frozen vegetables okay?

Yes. Plain frozen vegetables are just as good as fresh. Skip any that come in a sauce or seasoning blend.
